Sandy worked for the city, so he had a car, but he was a cop, so it was the worst car in the city. Nobody drove a purebred vehicle in post-apocalypse San Francisco. Everyone had some variation of a Frankenstein’s monster of a Toyota Cadillac Firebird with church pew seats or a Ford Reliant with canvas doors and bug-screen windshields. Sandy’s car had been a police cruiser once but the doors and windows were gone and in the back they’d been replaced with chicken wire, bolted to the frames to make a functional cage out of the back seat. The wire doors could be peeled back like the wall of a chicken coop and, if necessary, held closed with handcuffs. On the front, the windows and doors had been carefully replaced by cheerful optimism.

So the cool, clammy maritime wind at speed was more like an open sleigh ride, with bugs. Sandy wore swimmer’s goggles and I shielded my eyes with my hand, and watched Sandy drive the skeleton of a police cruiser through a damp San Francisco night looking like a bomber pilot from World War One.

“Are we expecting backup?” I said.

“We going to need it for Shore, you think?”

“Not if you’re planning on killing him, no, but he’s got my gun.”

“Okay, good, that means I only have to worry about Shore. Just stay behind me, I’m not even sure I want to do anything, we’re just going to take a look.”
